What is Kumo Study?
Kumo Study is the brainchild of Alex Kerr, who is Kumo’s CEO and Founder of Kumo. Alex saw a gap in the market for an accessible, all in one study tool that helped students, especially those with ADHD stay focused and block distractions while studying.
Insert Kumo Study. Kumo is your jack of all trades study tool and ultimate distraction blocker in the form of a Google plug in. The tool has four key functions to keep students focused and minimise any pesky distractions and unnecessary procrastination.

The four key tools of Kumo Study include:

Bookmark manager
citations in custom folders, annotate with notes and drafts, and quickly retrieve them using the search function and tags.
Task List
No more forgetting important tasks. You'll be able to plan your week, establish daily routines, and track your progress to stay motivated.
Set deadlines for your tasks using the Pomodoro method or customise your own timer.
Site Blocker
Stay focused by blocking and avoiding distracting websites
Task Timer
An evidence-based pomodoro timer that incorporates breaks and to allow those working on a task or studying to make the most of their hyperfocus periods.

The Challenge
Kumo Study aimed to provide an accessible, all-in-one study tool for students with ADHD. Our initial research revealed several interconnected challenges spanning user experience, content, and accessibility:
User Experience Challenges
-
Functionality not meeting users’ expectations based on product messaging
-
Unintuitive interface causing task completion issues
-
Complex user journeys creating cognitive load and confusion amongst users
-
Limited accessibility features for ADHD and neurodiverse users
-
Inconsistent and confusing navigation patterns
-
Inconsistent claims to actual functionality within the tool causing the tool low user retention rates

Content Design and Communication Challenges
-
Technical and unclear language creating barriers to understanding product offering
-
Identifying, clarifying and communicating Kumo's USP, collating with business goals
-
Lack of brand voice and tone
-
In need of a design system and brand guidelines
-
Inconsistent messaging across platforms
-
Unclear value proposition affecting user trust, interest, downloads and retention rates
-
Lack of clarity of the paid and free versions of the tool
-
Limited emotional connection with users due to impersonal tone

Kumo Study aims to create a seamless all-in-one study tool for students with ADHD. As UX Consultants, we joined in on Kumo’s mission towards a more inclusive world and digital products, which values differences and fosters individual potential.

01. | DISCOVER & ANALYSE
Client kick off meeting
We used the initial kick off meeting as a briefing session to answer questions about the goals, ethos, USPs, successes and pain points. Given the time and budget constraints, we then filled in a Lean UX canvas using Figjam.
The conversation uncovered that Kumo were open to any and all feedback and improvement of their product and branding. In that sense, it was a blank canvas that could be refined into the ultimate study product which allowed me to use a combination of my UX, marketing, branding and project management experience.
Heuristic evaluation and testing of the plug in functionality
An indepth heuristic evaluation of the website and the plug, paired with initial user interviews supplied by Kumo showed a lack of consistency in language and messaging used throughout, a lack of trust in the credibility of the current site with people people hesitant to download the product and issues with functionality and navigation within the plug in tool.
Understanding the Current User Journey and User Research and Testing

Given our time constraints and that we were supplied multiple user interviews and testing data from Kumo, we decided to create and send a combined survey with a separate comprehensive user testing section that was able to be carried out remotely via Google Forms. This provided us with qualitative data about the current product.
We then merged the data received from Kumo Study with our own research and survey to collect data on student experiences and aspects of Kumo Study performance.
We then analysed this data through affinity mapping to determine if there were commonalities that impacted multiple users.
We also reviewed this hand in hand with our customer journey mapping to identify problematic points as opportunities for improvements in the current experience.

Affinity Mapping and Research Analysis
After receiving the feedback, our UX team worked together in Figma to affinity map and identify the key successes, preferences and pain points they had experienced using and interacting with Kumo Study.
After a comprehensive affinity mapping process, we then mapped the key themes, both overarching and specifically for the plug in tools and collated a list of key feedback based on each Kumo Study tools.

Comparative and Competitive Analyses

We completed a competitive analysis of similar productivity tools in the market, focusing on key features, usability, pricing strategies and USPs, assessing these strengths and weaknesses relative to Kumo Study.
This helped us find possible opportunities for growth regarding the pain points highlighted in the user feedback and also helped us understand what Kumo is currently doing well and what could be improved.

Identifying Kumo’s USPs
Based on our user testing, research, analysis and competitive and comparative analyses. The tema and I came up with a finalised list of Kumo’s key USPs that would inform our design decisions and thinking for the remainder of the sprint.
All-in-One Functionality: Kumo combines a study assistant, site blocker, bookmarking tool, and task manager in a single platform (Most other productivity tools only have one function)
Affordability: It offers a free version that maintains most functionalities of the paid version.
Simplicity to minimise distractions: to avoid overwhelming users with ADHD.
Academic Focus: Kumo is academically focused, providing a distraction-reduced environment for enhanced concentration.
Bookmarking and Citations: Ability to bookmark web and journal articles into folders and convert them to references.
02. | IDEATION & FEATURE PRIORITISATION
We began brainstorming solutions using our key findings and insights as a guide.
The ideation process produced a long list of potential improvements to the website and plug-in tools.
Factoring in the scope of our three week timeframe and financial constraints, we focused on achievable goals that would provide the largest impact for the lowest effort and began sketching initial ideas and concepts for product improvement.
Key Considerations for our Design Solution
-
The extension's UX/UI needs to be more user-friendly and inclusive.
-
Enhancing design and messaging for the plugin and website could better engage and support students with ADHD.
-
A UI tailored for ADHD, with clear messaging, could improve comprehension and user experience.
-
Streamlining names, onboarding, and tools like citation and tasklist will boost usability and retention.
-
Our ultimate aim is to make it easier for students with ADHD to maximise the plug-in's benefits, stay engaged in their studies, and enhance their focus and academic performance.

Feature Prioritisation
We created an Impact-Effort matrix to help us prioritise efficient and impactful changes.
-
Necessary near-term design solutions are marked in red
-
Feedback highlighted need for some significant updates to the UI

05. | BRINGING THE VISION TO LIFE AND CLIENT DELIVERY
A comprehensive design solution had been reached, including a remapped user experience, clever research driven features, a refined and simplified user interface, updated branding, clarified messaging and an inclusive design for the Kumo Study website and plug in tool.

The solution focused around highlighting the unique USPs of Kumo Study and aligning these with user needs based on research to both address the current user pain points, whilst optimising the tools accessibility for students with ADHD. Utilising our well defined research backed plan and feature list, we initially sketched out our ideas, checking in with Alex and the Kumo developer team to ensure all would be both possible and meet expectations. We then used Figma to create wireframes and an interactive prototype in order to bring our final product and vision to life.

Once this was completed and we were in our final week of the sprint, I lead a comprehensive client presentation, walk through the Figma prototype (link below) and handover to explain our work, concepts, brand messaging, content design and suggestions on implementation.
The Kumo CEO and team were delighted with our final product and keenly implemented our solution within the following two weeks.
06. | RESULTS AND IMPACT
Our redesign achieved significant improvements across multiple key metrics, which were measured in follow up user surveys and interviews.

Usability Metrics
-
92% found the new interface intuitive
-
88% reported improved task completion
-
95% of ADHD users found the tool more accessible
-
85% better feature comprehension
